Freeport Outdoor Activities
Because of its geographical location at the mouth of Casco Bay, Freeport locals spend a lot of time outside and have crafted a wealth of outdoor activities for tourists. A wonderful place to visit for outdoor enthusiasts is Wolfe's Neck Woods State Park, located just five minutes outside of Freeport. A five minute drive creates a massive environmental transition--from the vibrancy of downtown Freeport to the quiet seclusion of nature. Inside the park, which borders Maine's famous rocky shoreline, you'll find marshes to wade through and gently waving white pines. The park has hiking trails, picnic spots and even just benches from which you can take in the stunning view. Another fun outdoor activity for the whole family is the L.L. Bean Outdoor Discovery School, where both adults and kids can learn kayaking, paddling, fishing and even archery in a fun and educational environment. The instructors are patient and knowledgeable and arrange everything you need for your trip. And for those who like to stay put while enjoying the outdoors, Freeport's Atlantic Seal Cruises offer boat rides through the Casco Bay, where you can enjoy the wildlife and natural surroundings while luxuriating on a comfortable boat. From watching the captain haul in lobster nets to watching for seals and osprey, the whole family is guaranteed a good time. And if you're visiting Freeport in the fall, the Fall Foliage Cruises are an amazing way to take in the famous New England fall landscapes. One final Freeport outdoor activity that promises to be one of the most interesting sights you've ever seen is the famous Desert of Maine, which is a naturally occuring phenomenon in which the landscape looks like a desert! Here, in the heart of New England and just outside Freeport, are miles of sand and sun, a "Glacier Desert." Visiting the park located onsite will educate you on how the desert was formed, how it's sustained and which flora and fauna are nurtured here. |
