Bar Harbor Acadia National Park

Acadia National Park which encompasses much of Mount Desert Island, smaller coastal islands and a small portion of the mainland, covers more than 35,000 acres of land. Woodrow Wilson created the landmark in 1916 naming it Sieur de Monts National Monument. In 1918, it was designated a national park and the name was changed to Lafayette National Park to honor the French supporter of the American Revolution. In 1929, the name was again changed to the present day name. John D. Rockefeller played an important role in financing and building a network of over 50 miles of carriage trails, 17 granite bridges and 2 gate lodges within the park. After the fire, which destroyed almost one-third of the park, J.D. Rockefeller was instrumental in the restoration. The charred landscape left by the fire, made way for a dynamic period of growth, which is said to have increased the park’s beauty. Whether by foot, bicycle, bus or car the indigenous flora and fauna of the park as well as the ever changing vistas have to be seen to be appreciated. This beautiful and historic landscape will prove to be a wonderful “back to nature” experience for the bed and breakfast traveler.
