Upon her return to the United States, Pamela noted that there were actually a number of bed and breakfasts being developed in this country; especially on both coasts. Lacking a comprehensive central directory, it was hard for bed and breakfast aficionados to find the bed and breakfast of their dreams. She set about to rectify that situation. The first edition of The Complete Guide to Bed and Breakfast, Inns and Guesthouses was published in 1982 and included 1200 properties. Today’s 25th anniversary print edition features over 25,000 properties worldwide in 130 countries.
This rapid increase in bed and breakfast establishments started less than two decades ago when Americans, faced with higher costs for foreign travel, began to explore the back roads and hidden communities of their own country. Other factors have influenced the growth and popularity of bed and breakfasts. Among them, the desire to get away from the daily routine and repetitiveness of city life; the desire to be pampered for a few days; and also the desire to stay in a place with time to meet new friends among the other guests.
In the bed and breakfast industry, online bed and breakfast directories started in the mid 1990s when the Internet became a major marketing force, making it affordable for innkeepers to promote their properties worldwide.
