Bed and Breakfast
There was a time, and it wasn’t so long ago, when finding a bed and breakfast was a rarity in the United States of America and abroad. Travelers made do at a hotel or motel; there was no alternative. The few bed and breakfasts were scattered across the rural areas of New England and California. B&B’s as they are often referred to as, were little known to most travelers; often their only advertisement was by word of mouth.
But in a few short years that has changed, and changed in a way that could be called dramatic. There has been an explosion in the number of bed and breakfasts, both in the United States and around the world. Today, bed and breakfasts can be found in every state, and often in every city; they have become true alternatives to a chain motel room or the city hotel with its hundreds of cubicles.
This sudden increase in bed and breakfast establishments started less than two decades ago when Americans, faced with higher costs for foreign travel, began to explore the back roads and hidden communities of their own country. Other factors have influenced the growth and popularity of bed and breakfasts. Among them, the desire to get away from the daily routine and sameness of city life; the desire to be pampered for a few days; and also the desire to stay in a place with time to make new friends among the other guests.
Restored older homes have become the bed and breakfasts answer to those desires. The setting most often is rural; the innkeepers provide the service – not a staff with name tags – and the parlor is a gathering place for the handful of guests. They are a home away from home.
An effort to collect as much information about as many bed and breakfasts as possible in one source has been overdue. Now that has been remedied. You are visiting the results at your fingertips.
