Dear Innkeeping Friends,

It's 2011 at last! I predict that this is going to be a year of financial resurgence for the B&B industry. Why? Several reasons. First, B&B guests are by and large an affluent group. And it is the affluent who are recovering first. According to Y partnership, we can look to a positive gain this year as "more affluent households will lead us out of the recession." Second, get out there and market to the people who can drive to your property. "It's a much wider pool of people to attract (Hotel Interactive)." And finally, people are looking for experiential travel, short trips that really deliver on experience. And that my friends, is the bred and breakfast industry's forte.
Here at Bed and Breakfasts Inns and Guesthouses International, we have an exciting year of innovations planned for our members. With new exclusive programs on social networking sites to our hot new program with Kindle and other e-readers. Wishing you all the very best for 2011 and looking forward to seeing many of you at the ten B&B conferences Marie and I are already scheduled to attend and address this year. Keep marketing, keep reading, keep caring for your guests, and rest assured 2011 marks a new beginning!
Best, Pamela & Marie |

Sensory Branding is Here to Stay
| by Fred Bethel President, Secret Scentsations
A trend that is clearly here to stay began a few years ago and has been increasingly prevalent in hotels everywhere. Mind you, its longevity and market acceptance makes it hard to continue calling it a trend. I'm talking about the appeal to the sense of smell as a form of branding. The next time you visit a hotel, make sure to inhale and take in this effective form of creating a memorable experience for guests that will subconsciously draw them back again and again. Sundance Film Festival for Innkeepers
| In recent travel articles we shared with our readers the highlights of the critically aclamined Sundance Film Festival in beautiful Utah. If taking a break from your B&B this winter, consider participating in this nationally treasured Park City Sundance Film Festival. Sundance is the United State's largest independent film festival, and innkeepers will experience an excitement and freshness in the air of Park City if they take a break here in January. The festival showcases American and international upcoming independent filmmakers and have started the careers of some of today's most popular filmmakers including Kevin Smith and Quentin Tarantino. Since the Sundance Film Festival began in 1978, it has been the destination for people to discover the amazing documentaries and films that the independent film community has to offer. While you are enjoying the spectacular events of the film festival from January 20th to the 30th, there are plenty of amazing B&B properties that are within walking distance to the theatre. And not to forget one of the most of important things while visiting Park City, the food! The wide range of culinary specialties is among the finest in the Mountain West. While you are out around town don't forget about historic Main Street, which boasts specialty boutiques where innkeepers will find the perfect souvenirs. Enjoy the brisk and exciting atmosphere that surrounds Park City during the Sundance Film Festival, encouraging innkeepers and locals alike to immerse themselves in the high energy of the Park City Sundance Film Festival. |

Get Ready for Groundhog's Day!
| The month of February begins with a bang as Punxsutawney Phil makes his prediction for the arrival of spring on Ground Hog's Day! This eccentric tradition has been occurring on Gobbler's Knob in Pennsylvania since the 1880's, where the famed Punxsutawney Phil will venture above ground and either see his shadow or not, and predict another 6 weeks of winter or an early spring. With roots in old Scottish traditions for Candlemas, this yearly event carries on an age honored tradition that attracts visitors from all over the world to Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. The Ground Hog Day event in Punxsutawney is really a 4 day celebration in this historic town, with festivities and activities catered to the influx of travelers looking to see Phil's prediction in person. Lodging fills up fast because of the notoriety of the ground hog in question, whose fame has lasted him 120 years! Stay in nearby towns. Prior to the prediction, innkeepers are invited to enjoy banquets and breakfasts in Phil's honor. Visitors will enjoy the jubilant atmosphere as February 2nd, and Phil's appearance, approach, when a proper celebration commences, and visitors get the unique experience of Ground Hog's Day in Punxsutawney. Vendors line the streets to cater to the crowds, while local events and festivities, such as kids crafting, meet ups with the top-hated Inner Circle (Punxsutawney Phil's caretakers and translators), and picnics appeal to visitors. Phil's birthday is celebrated in the charming Barclay Square, while dedicated Ground Hog Day enthusiasts get married by the Mayor of Punxsutawney and take advantage of the celebration! Ground Hog's Day in Punxsutawney is unique and special in the place it holds in American traditions, and a celebratory visit during the climactic event is a great way to usher in spring, or entertain another few weeks of winter and take a break from innkeeping.
