Innkeepers That Could
|
John and Joetta Holt are terrific examples of very active
innkeepers who manage to enjoy highly active personal lives and a multitude of
interests while successfully running their bed and breakfast since 2004. Some
of their friends know them as entertainers par excellence while others think of
them as ballroom dancing legends with all the flair and flash that goes with
that lovely art. Still others think of John as the avid sailor who can
frequently be found racing to Bermuda on the Granmar. On top of all these
interests, John and Joetta are in the process of opening a second bed and
breakfast in Annapolis, just a few blocks from the Annapolis Naval Academy,
which they have carefully positioned to take advantage of visiting families,
students coming in for testing, returning alumni, and any other guests wishing
to enjoy the ambiance of Annapolis at an affordable price.
It's quite impressive all that John and Joetta manage to do,
especially now as they prepare to open their 2nd B&B. What is it that keeps their sails so
full? Is it their spirit of inclusion
and generosity? Is it their youthful
attitude and determination?
We asked and they answered:
"One of us is very organized, she's the main bean counter
and I'm more of a promoter and greeter.
My wife's organization is critical to our success as is my focus on
marketing and generating exposure for our property. We could not do all of this alone so we price our rooms to afford
a small, flexible staff to cook for our guests, clean and manage the day-to-day
maintenance of the house. If we were to
do all the work ourselves we would not have the time to effectively promote our
business and essentially fill the rooms."
It is clear that John and Joetta have their priorities in
line, they are putting much of their energy towards generating interest and
bookings at their property while others are responsible for dealing with daily
chores of running the B&B. Their
positive, can-do attitude is admirable and inspirational, one that as small
business owners, I'm sure all innkeepers can appreciate.
Thank you for sharing with us John and Joetta, it's
inspirational in all that you achieve and what a positive attitude you work
hard to maintain.

Featured B&B Destinations for Visitors: Powerful Destination Marketing
|
According to PhoCusWright, "destination web sites play no
small role in the travel planning and shopping process...travelers are clearly
looking for local insight into activities, events and attractions to enhance
their experience in addition to lodging options."
Travelers are looking to destination web sites for the
same personalized expertise - not just cookie-cutter hotel rooms. That's where we come in, our twice-monthly B&B Travel
Newsletter goes out to thousands of opt-in subscribers, recommending cities,
things to do, where to eat and so much more.
Our most recent issues featured these U.S. and International B&B
destinations:

The Pursuit of (Innkeeping) Happiness
The framers of the US Constitution knew their
linguistics when they used the word "pursuit" in place of any other in regards
to happiness. It seems that this state of mind, while achievable, is not always
the easiest to find. However, according
to a study just released based on 72 years of research (following 268 folks
through their lifetime and collecting detailed notes of the elements that make
up happiness), the top three aspects that are vital for happiness just happen
to be those that are an integral part of most innkeepers' lives They are:
1. Having a
healthy outlet, a means by which to channel fears, nerves, and struggles in a
creative and positive way. Any
physical hobby, from jogging to quilting, provides a soothing repetition of
movements that can brighten your mood after an especially needy guest.
2. Don't take
yourself too seriously. Loosen up
and let your guests see your groovy dance moves once in a while!
3. Happiness
must be shared. And who better to share it with than your guests and fellow
innkeeper(s)? Now that I think about
it, this is probably the explanation why the vast majority of the hundreds of
innkeepers I've met over the past 25 years are some of the happiest people I've
ever known.
Keep on doing it!
Happy summer, Pamela
