Decor on a Dime:  Exceptional Fall Foliage

Pumpkin Centerpiece
Who doesn't love fall with the vibrant changing of colors, festive pumpkins on people's doorsteps, delectable treats in the evening?  Fall is one of the most beautiful times of the year which you can easily, and affordably, capture in your B&B.

You can add Fall Foliage decor to your home without spending an exhorbant amount of money, or even much time.  No need to buy plastic trinkets and expensive fake trees when nature offers all your colorful materials.  Guest's will appreciate your timely decor, so go with the season and have some fun incorporating fall into your B&B:

Apples in a Basket

*  Create a centerpiece out of Pumpkins and Cords, or Indian Corn with pale yellow, dark red, brown, and black kernels.

*  Place mini pumpkins with branches and leaves on your mantel, you could even carve out a few and place a tea light inside or fall scented candle.

*  Fill a glass vase with colorful apples and pears.

*  String some pine cones and dried leaves on a fishing line and hand above your windows, door or even wind up a staircase.

Pumpkin and Corn*  Collect a few pumpkins and/or gourds in various colors and sizes, displaying together to enhance their contrasts and shades.

*  Replace your existing artwork by simply overlaying a new picture in the frame using fall images such as fruit or maple leaves.  You can use images from a magazine or print off your favorite photo on your printer with glossy photo paper.Maple Leaves

*  Place a few potted plants around the B&B to bring a bit of the outdoors in, such as Michaelmas Daisy and Chrysanthemum.

*  Cut out brown, yellow and red felt placemats for your breakfast table, no need for a liner if only for one season.

*  Cut out various leave shapes on brown paper bags to create your own Autumn Luminaries.

*  Add a table runner in fall colors to your dining and breakfast tables, compliment with candle sticks with brown or orange candles.

*  Fill a wicker gourd with vegetables from your kitchen, using and replenishing the vegetables when needed.

*  Place fall scented soaps in guestrooms as well as a small bundle of cinnamon sticks ties with a natural cloth to add a subtle scent in the room.

Fall WreathPlace yourself in your guests' shoes, starting from the sign identifying your property and front door. Get creative to catch your guest's eye. If you love trees, leaves, or fruit, consider making a wreath and hanging it from your front door using your favorite natural elements.  Sprinkle in an apple spice oil or cinnamon oil to add a welcoming scent upon entering.

Get creative, pick up what you find in your natural setting and have fun with it, guest's will remember the charm and hospitality of your Inn above all else.

Enjoy decorating!

Safety outweighs all other factors for travelers.

Marie LanierDear Innkeepers,

I don't think it's any surprise that a travelers greatest concern is that of their safety for themselves and their family when choosing a destination to visit.  Travel Agent Central today released findings from a study of 9,000 people in 38 countries which supported this theory, stating that potential travelers care more about their "safety when choosing their holiday destination" than cost or things to do.  In the study, individuals "consistently selected safety concerns related to crime, natural disasters, health or terrorism, as one of the main things they considered when crossing off a location from their list, scoring it with an importance of 8.5 out of 10 on average."

Since this is such a prevalent issue on the mind of travelers today, you may want to consider sharing with travelers information about your safe location and in particular, safety measures you have taken at your B&B to ensure a relaxing, stress-free vacation for your guest.  Some innkeepers have gone as far as to include a page on "Guest Safety" on their website which I think is a proactive way to address any fears guests may have, even before they come up with them.  Here are some ideas on information you could include on such a page if you felt appropriate for your B&B:
  • 24/7 on-site staff
  • Deadbolts on all guestroom doors
  • Secure locked windows
  • Lighted paths and entryways
  • Fire alarms in all rooms
  • In-room Safes
  • Private Parking
  • Nearby emergency services
  • Guest information private at all times
While I myself am a very adventurous traveler and have a tendency not to heed even US travel advisories, I think that 8.5 out of 10 cannot be ignored and is something you can readily address.  Any reviews you have received, be them online or in your guestbook, from guests that have complimented you on your safety measures, be sure to include that information (with the guest's permission of course).

Happy Fall to everyone!

I was very pleased last week when Laura Bly of USA Today called me for an interview.  The article entitled "B&Bs welcome recession-weary travelers" is currently available  here and recommends LanierBB.com as a directory in the article!

Laura did a terrific job putting bed and breakfasts in an excellent light and highlighting how nicely many properties have weathered the economic storm.  Two of the things I recommended to her for readers to enjoy their B&B stay included checking inn directories, including testimonials  such as we have listed on LanierBB.com, and most importantly, picking up the telephone to call the property directly for special rates, packages and Inn events.   I was really glad to have a chance to talk with Laura and emphasize the importance of talking directly with the innkeeper, especially for the traveler who wants something unique and personal.   You can view the full article here.

Upcoming B&B Conferences, including a free conference for Innkeepers!

October 20th, 21st and 22nd I will be in Nebraska addressing the Nebraska bed and breakfast association, and the next day the Nebraska tourism association.  I really look forward to the opportunity to spend some time in the Heartland.  In early November I will be in Ontario addressing that province's bed and breakfast association.  And then November 8-10th Marie and I will be co-hosting the B&B Fair for Fun and Profit in partnership with International Hotel/Motel & Restaurant Show along with the AH&LA.  I hope to see many of you in New York for a learning holiday in the Big Apple, remember there are no conference fees to attend, and the conference has worked out some great deals on hotels, and offers free transport from those hotels to and from the Javits Convention Center. We are having special sessions particularly of interest to B&Bs, some presented by innkeepers.  Take a look at our website for all the details.  We are going to have a great time together!

Wishing you all the best for a wonderful harvest time.
