Visitors to the 2,048 acres under the auspices of the National Park Service will notice log cabins dotting the rolling landscape. Each provided a home to a dozen men during the harsh winter of 1777-78. Visitors can stroll through Washington's headquarters, its rooms threadbare, yet authentically furnished.
Other places of interest include the National Memorial Arch, the statue of Major General Anthony Wayne, the statue of Major General Von Steuben, the granite memorial to the many unknown men who perished during that fateful winter, and the bronze replica of Houdon's statue of Washington, which stands in the state capitol of Richmond.
Visitors will not want to miss the Gothic Washington Memorial Chapel with its adjacent Bell Tower. The chapel has the famous window, executed by Nicola D'Ascenzo, depicting Washington at prayer. |
