| The Central Market, located just off Penn Square, dates back to the mid-1700's, and it is the country's oldest publicly-owned, continuously-operated farmers market. Inside the Romanesque Revival style building, visitors will find stands offering regional food specialties including Pennsylvania Dutch sausage, scrapple (a breakfast meat of pork scraps and cornmeal), pickled vegetables in a spicy mustard sauce, and a variety of freshly baked bread. Don’t be surprised if you also come across delicious strips of Jamaican jerk chicken, Middle Eastern cuisine, and other exotic fare. |
