The oldest group of Old Order Amish, consisting of about 16-18,000 people, live in Lancaster County. There are a number of ways to become acquainted with the Amish way of life, and a horse-and-buggy tour through their picturesque farmland is a wonderful place to start. Time seems to stand still as you pass by orderly Amish farms with energy-producing windmills and hand-made clothing fluttering gracefully in the breeze.
Quaint bed and breakfasts offer authentic Pennsylvania Dutch cooking and comfortable beds kept warm by authentic Amish quilts. Some Bed and Breakfasts specialize in arranging family meals in Amish households, where guests can get to know their Amish hosts in an intimate setting.
There are also businesses that provide further information about the Amish way of life. The Amish Farm and House is an authentic working farm that offers a guided tour, which includes farm animals, handmade crafts, and a beautiful house that's at the center of it all. The Amish Experience offers bus tours of the surrounding Amish farmlands, a mouth watering all-you-can-eat family style meal, tours of a designated "Heritage Site" Old Order Amish House and the spectacular F/X Theater production of "Jacob's Choice".
