If you're not in Aspen during the winter, take one of the hiking trails up the local mountains. Both the Ute Trial and the Aspen Mountain Trail climb Ajax and offer stunning views of Aspen and its surrounding areas. An easy alternative is The Rio Grande Trail, which runs through lower downtown along the Roaring Fork River. The Smuggler Road Trail ends at a sundeck overlooking downtown and this is where you'll find many of the locals. More experienced hikers might enjoy hiking to the summits one of the 14,000-foot peaks that include Maroon Bells, Pyramid Peak and Snowmass Mountain.
Mountain biking is extremely popular around Aspen and bikers have a number options to choose from. The Government Trail is appropriate for experienced riders, while the Rio Grande trail and the Lincoln Creek Road appeals to those who would rather take it easy while enjoying the pristine countryside. Guided bike tours are available. |
