Mendocino Village, best known for its spectacular scenery and distinctive wineries, is situated on a peninsula surrounded on three sides by picturesque wildflower covered bluffs and crashing surf, beaconing adventurous romantics to travel the trail. Established in the 1850's, natural wonders abound, many of the New England style Victorians have been lovingly restored into romantic Bed & Breakfast Inns, world class restaurants and quaint shops.
Part of California’s famous North Coast wine region, located in an American Viticultural Area designation, glass bottom beaches, and unique ocean front botanical gardens, Mendocino County begins about 90 miles north of San Francisco, directly north of Sonoma County. The Mendocino wine region is bounded by California's Coastal Mountain Range, the Pacific Ocean, and the great northern redwood forests.
Mendocino's vineyards are divided among several small Mayacamas and Coastal Range mountain valleys, following the drainages of the Russian and Navarro Rivers. Vineyards rise from the river plains, onto the bench lands above.
Mendocino’s beauty has made it a back drop for dozens of movies and commercials. Many films have been made here including East of Eden, Summer of 42, Overboard, The Russians are Coming, Cujo, Pontiac Moon, Karate Kid II, and many more. Even cult grade B flicks like Dead and Buried, The Haunting, Humanoids from the Deep were done here on the Mendocino coast. TV fans will probably recognize Mendocino as the real Cabot Cove, the fictitious town where Murder She Wrote was filmed.
The harbor town of Fort Bragg is best known for the Skunk Train that takes its riders on a trip through the redwoods and back in time. The harbor bustles with activity from fishermen bringing in their daily haul for the local restaurants and charter boats that offer fishing and whale watching adventures. The flower meet the sea at the Botanical Gardens, a flower lovers paradise.
