Despite the ground rules of never fall in love with a property before buying, my husband and I crossed the curved bridge on the entry to Gramercy and up the hill with the stone wall and were entranced. At the auction, there were few bidders. Families were afraid of the deterioration and developers of the restrictive zoning.
Therefore, 23 years ago, we became the proud owners of 45 acres with a mansion, carriage house, five houses, an apartment building, an ice house and pond and the oldest organic farm in the state. We knew that there were many warts and pimples but had no idea of the many major projects ahead. We decided that as a B&B business, our restoration costs could be tax deductible. We had a head start because the Baltimore Symphony Associates chose the mansion to be the 10th Baltimore fundraiser showhouse. Shortly thereafter, the Washington Post ran a terrific feature story about us in the food section entitled "Bed, Breakfast & Basil." This article was picked up by newspapers across the country and in Canada. The phone has not stopped ringing since.
We plunged ahead. Our daughter, Cristin, joined the team and became an invaluable asset. Ten years later, every surface had been painted, every roof redone, new glazing in all the windows, new furnaces, septics, and wells. We are now not only a B&B but in the wedding and elopement business. A few years later, the fire marshal knocked on the door and lay down the ultimatum that we would have to install a sprinkler system and second egress from the third floor. We worked with an architect to create an addition that we believe truly balances the mansion. Plus we now have adequate public restrooms, coat closets and three extra B&B rooms to help pay the bills.
The gardens became our next focus. Stone and brick infrastructure were installed to connect the previously installed wedding gardens. Meandering paths lead through shade gardens. Artwork was installed. Garden design and execution is now my avocation. The gardens are now a main attraction.
Most of our employees have stayed with us through all the transformations. We all love Gramercy! The inscriptions in our room books verify that there is something magical and enchanting about the whole property.
