Innkeeper's Story

presenting

Seven gnerations of one family on the estate since 1771

from Farm By the River B&B with Stables Inn

The Farm By the River has been passed down in one family since 1771. One of your hosts, Rick Davis's descendents were to "settle and cultivate the land". You can see examples of both an English (rare) and a Yankee Barn (c. 1771-3).

Rick can remember stories about his great-grandfather, who made a livelihood from the farm, caring for a small herd of dairy cows, had an apple orchard, and grew vegetables. From his wooded acreage, he cut and sold wood, and made syrup from his "Maple Sugar Orchard"- a site to see in the Fall. Prior to electricity, Charlie supplied the neighbors with large blocks of ice for their "ice boxes" that he cut by hand from nearby Echo Lake. Rick, his father & grandfather worked on the dairy farm til1 the 1970s. The farmhouse was a hospitlaity place as well. Rick used this as his private residence until he married his wife, Charlene (artist landscape architect) & they rennovated & re-opened the farmhouse as a B & B (a blend of tradtion & luxury amenities) with a public horse stables. The fields are still hayed providing feed for the 18 resident stables horses. They are both avid gardeners & raise edible flowers as garnish to their brefkast plates.
