The B Street House - A Dream Come True
from B Street House Bed and Breakfast Inn

Carolyn always wanted a B&B. Why? Well, maybe to showcase her cooking talents. Chris always wanted to build his own home. When we met we found our dreams merged at 58 North B Street in Virginia City, Nevada. Chris' dream of restoring this charming old house blended perfectly with Carolyn's dream of having a B&B in one of the most interesting towns, historically, in the American West.
A very dilapidated “as-is” home was advertised on the internet as having survived the “Great Fire” of 1875. Intrigued, we went to see it. Unoccupied for 20 years or more, the house was used for storage. Looking past all the “stuff” we soon realized our dream of a B&B could be created from the almost-falling-down old lady. The first challenge was in keeping our “real” jobs and commuting to Virginia City on weekends to restore the place!
Chris soon realized that restoring an old house was a lot more of a challenge than building one from scratch. Strangely enough, moldings and woodwork from the 1870s can’t be purchased at Home Depot! All interior systems, heating, plumbing, insulation, sheetrock walls had to be added a-new. Even air-conditioning in the guest rooms has been added for everyone’s comfort during the summer months.
Carolyn taught Nevada History (among other things) at a Nevada Community College for many years as a part-timer. In researching the home, the first challenge was in finding the correct building date. HGTV’s “If Walls Could Talk” heard of our quest and featured us on their show in 2006. Actually built in 1875 after the “Great Fire”, the home was owned by Henry Piper, a saloon owner and brother to John Piper of the famous Piper’s Opera House.
All things being said, it has been a wonderful adventure. We finished the guest areas and opened as the B Street House Bed and Breakfast in September of 2007. Would we do it again? Yes, indeed, in a heartbeat!
