Letter From The Innkeepers

from Anne Hathaway's Cottage Inn

In summer 2002, we left our first careers in journalism, government, and nonprofit management to explore new careers - serving as host and hostess to a parade of fascinating guests like you!

Many have asked why we chose to move so far, but anyone who has been to Ashland already knows the answer. Apart from the stellar productions on display nightly in the theaters here, there are countless natural wonders to explore. Go hiking around Crater Lake. Rafting on the Rogue River. Drive to Shasta or the Pacific Coast. Or try our vineyards. Just remember before you plan to go swimming: there is no Gulf Stream bringing warm water northward during the summer - it's cold!

The real reason we decided to embark on this new journey is that two of our three children are living within driving range. Visiting them over the years we were converted to the glories of the West Coast, and Anne Hathaway's seemed like a natural place for a new home.

We both have always loved cooking for company, and are greatly enjoying our role as Innkeepers. It’s been great fun to find new uses for old family linens, china and silver, not to mention recipes found and shared. New walls to decorate. New shelves to fill with books. And for both of us, new gardens to tend. We're members of the local Grange and both serve as volunteers at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. David is currently serving as president of the Ashland Bed and Breakfast Network and is on the board of the Oregon Bed and Breakfast Guild. Deedie is an active member of the Rotary Club of Ashland.

We hope you'll come enjoy Ashland, our adopted town -- the theatres, the restaurants, the shopping, the parks, hikes and bike paths. It all begins here -- at Anne Hathaway's. It's said Anne Hathaway never left Stratford to see one of Will Shakespeare's plays. Nonetheless, we think you'll agree that his presence is felt at breakfast here every morning when conversation about last night's play enlivens the meal!

In July 2004, the middle of our third season here, we purchased the cottages across the street from us known as All's Well and As You Like It. Built at the end of the 19th century, they've been carved into wonderfully spacious and gracious rooms, all with their own private entrance, kitchenette, bath with Jacuzzi and private porch. Surrounded by English gardens, they're better than a cup of tea for many travelers, and guests there have the option of eating the fulsome continental breakfast we provide or joining others at the B&B.

We'd love to have you come for a visit. Please join us!
