Innkeeping As We Know It

from Fairthorne B&B Inn

bed and breakfast story photo of Ed & Diane Hutchinson

Ed & Diane Hutchinson met while both worked for New Jersey Bell Telephone . Living in Cape May surrounded with Bed & Breakfast inns planted the seed for our future innkeeping endeavor. The telephone company was our life for many years and provided good steady income and benefits for us and our children which by now were seven. But in 1992 Ed was offered an early retirement plan which lead to our becoming the new owners of The Fairthorne Inn. Diane continued to work full time until 1997 when she could retire and join Ed as a full time innkeeper.

Being an inn owner in Cape May is like a dream come true. We get to live in a beautiful town by the Atlantic Ocean with professional theater, music festivals , fine dining, beaches, Victorian buildings and many other activities. We are now ending our eighteenth year and still love what we do. We both have outside interests, Ed has his Kiwanis International work and Diane is the President of the Board of the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts in Cape May. The secret to innkeeping is you have love it! Your guests will know if you don’t. Our philosophy has always been to provide our guests with everything they could possibly need or want in a room that is beautifully decorated with luxurious linens and towels and try to never say no to a request. Our style is laid back, meaning we’re here for you when you need us but we’re not orchestrating your visit. We don’t think a guest’s visit is about us, it’s about them relaxing without our interference. We keep an open access office so the guests can always find us during the busy hours of the day or by telephone at night.

We have a small staff of part-time ladies. Mary has been with us almost from the beginning along with her two daughters Eva and Misty. Doreen joined our team three years ago. We are blessed with a staff that truly cares for the inn, our guests and each other.

Although we don’t take children you will often hear a little one or two around the inn. Our grandchildren are always welcome for a visit and often help in the cookie baking department.

Next year will bring with it some exciting changes to inn. One of our buildings will be The Designer Showhouse for 2010. This is an annual fund raising project for the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts. For the past five years a house has been chosen to be redecorated by interior designers who volunteer their services for both interior and exterior areas. The first floor of the inn will be open for tours while the second floor will continue to be open for guests only. We’re very excited to be a part of this project.
