In April, 2003 I decided that 22 years in the corporate life was enough and it was time to pursue my passion of getting into the hospitality business. To look at what we were getting ready to do, we participated in a weekend long seminar on how to buy an Inn. This was extremely helpful.
Next, I went and stayed with a friend of ours in Big Cotton Wood Canyon, Salt Lake City who owns a restaurant/lodge. I asked him if he would pay me room & board to work in every aspect of his business and for him to try and persuade me NOT to get into the business.
Four weeks later, as I was leaving, I told him that he did not do his job...we were going to buy an Inn. My wife and I hooked up with Oates & Bredfelt, Inn consultants, and lined up a trip to Vermont to look at buying an Inn.
We stayed 4 nights in 4 different Inns.
We told Bill Oates that we wanted to buy The Inn at Manchester, in Manchester, Vermont. He said we could not afford it. I told him to figure it out. The next thing I know Bill calls us back and we sign the letter of intent in June, 2003.
After 6 years we are still loving every day of our life style of being Innkeepers and we absolutely love where we are.
We are open 365 days a year.
We are very much "in" our business and we are very proud of all we have done at the Inn and of the offerrings made available to our guests.
We say yes to everything and figure it out later.
I envy myself and I only hope that everyone can experience their passion at least once in their lives...it is very special!
