Innkeeper's Story

Your Hosts
from The Maine Stay Inn

Judi and Walter Hauer think of themselves as Bostonians, although neither of them was raised there. Walter was born in Czechoslovakia and grew up in Germany, while Judi was born and raised in Ohio. Both spent their adult lives living close to Boston, mostly in Belmont. After many years of marriage without children, their daughter, Johanna, was born in 1987, and suddenly life became more exciting. Balancing their careers as sales executives with raising and educating Johanna was further complicated by her avid interest in figure skating. She has just graduated from Dartmouth College, where she skated occasionally and rowed on the varsity women's crew team, and is joining her parents at the Maine Stay.
Once their only child left for college, Judi and Walter had a chance to consider changing their lifestyle. While many of their friends planned out a retirement, the Hauers explored the possibility of becoming innkeepers. They set their sights on Kennebunkport once their Boston home sold. The Hauers had spent only two weekends in Kennebunkport prior to settling on this community for their new endeavor, but it felt just right! They love this sophisticated, yet quaint, town with its many galleries, boutiques, fine restaurants and spectacular seashore. The Maine Stay Inn, a grand sea captain's home, captured their hearts, with its sprawling grounds and private cottages. Judi and Walter love the inn's proximity to the ocean, where they often enjoy scenic walks and biking along Maine's breathtaking coast.
