When my husband asked me what I wanted for Christmas one Sunday afternoon Nov. 1997, I jokingly said the old Schenck Mansion in Vevay.
I have loved this old rundown mansion on the hill since I can remember. I always felt sad inside when I would look at the decay and neglect that took it toll over the years. When we opened our local paper the following Thursday and saw that it was for sale my immediate thought was , "we have to go take a look." It took a little coaching and a intense study to see what the restoration would cost before I convinced him we could do it. His reply was he never intended to live in town, so what the heck would we do with it? We are avid B&B travelers and thought the mansion would best be served if shared with other old house lovers. So in October of 2000 after a 2 years, 7 days a week, cracking the whip pretty hard, we open our doors as one of the most unique Bed and Breakfasts in the state if not the country. Over 12,000 square feet, 7 staircases, 13 fireplaces, 86 windows, and a true step back in time. Our loyal guest come back time and time again to help us save this beautiful, unique, mansion on the hill overlooking the quaint little river town of Vevay, Indiana.
