Innkeeper's Story
presenting
A Dream Come True
from The Red Horse Inn
Thirteen years ago, Mary and Roger Wolters had the
opportunity of a lifetime. They purchased a cut-
over piece of land nearly 200 acres in the
foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Located 30
minutes from Greenville and Spartanburg SC and 30
minutes from Hendersonville NC, it was a location
of convenience for those wanting a weekend getaway
or a destination resort for those desiring a
corporate retreat, couples retreat or a romantic
honeymoon vacation. The landscape alone, was
breathtaking. The views extend from Table Rock
State Park to Tryon Peak in NC.
The Wolters built 6 charming cottages and a main
inn that houses 6 luxurious guest rooms, a
conference center and a dining room and called it
The Red Horse Inn.
It had been a dream of theirs since they were
newlyweds. On their 21st anniversary, they
purchased the land, had a bulldozer delivered and
broke ground. Roger was working full time and so
Mary volunteered to do all the bull-dozer work.
“You could say I was a real romantic. I bought her
a string of pearls and a bulldozer for an
anniversary present” says Roger.
And thus began the daunting task of turning a cut
over piece of land into their dream.
Their sons, Benjamin and Christian, then college
age, helped build the cottages and did many major
landscaping jobs, such as the handsome rock walls,
while home on breaks from college.
To us, this is not a job, its a “calling.” It is
almost as if I was guided ...as if I had no say
in the matter. You know, this is the stuff dreams
are made of...no...these are the dreams that reach
out to all those souls that have shared time in
this place. Come, Welcome.
