Innkeeper's Story
presenting
Michael & Marty Gunhus
from The Aerie B&B Inn

Originally from Des Moines, Iowa, Michael and Marty Gunhus were high school sweethearts and married soon after college. They stayed in Des Moines and started raising their two sons; Eric lives in New York, and younger son Jeff lives in Maryland with his wife and two sons. Those two grandsons, Marty will tell you, are the real reason behind the move to the East Coast.
Michael and Marty previously lived in Long Beach, California and owned a small bed and breakfast there while also maintaining careers in "more conventional jobs." Marty was the executive assistant to the president of an international manufacturer of access control systems for over 14 years, while Michael was a senior construction inspector for the City of Los Angeles.
Between Iowa and California, moves to Greece, the Mediterranean island of Cyprus and Saudi Arabia became home to their family until they returned and moved to Colorado for four years and on to California in 1988. It was there in Long Beach in 1995 that they decided to open a bed and breakfast in their 1910 California Craftsman home, which they ran for seven years. Always telling their guests and friends that they wanted to do a bigger B&B in the future, they made the decision and after six months of searching, a trip to New Bern, NC in October of 2002 realized that dream.
