Renovators at the Helm
from Prospect Hill B&B Inn

We are innkeepers Judy and Robert Hotchkiss. We've been renovators almost since the day were married, and certainly since one day in 1972 when we repainted door trim in an old house we rented in the Seattle area.
Since then we have revived a series of turn-of-the-century homes in the Atlanta area, but nothing as daunting as a 6,000 square-foot shingle style Victorian located in a small town in rural Northeast Tennessee which became Prospect Hill.
Robert holds a physics degree from Georgia Tech and a law degree from Emory University. He also trained in nuclear submarines. Judy holds a journalism degree and is an avid student of renovation and gardening.
Judy designs and Robert (or workers) build it.
By 2000 we had added three dormers to the attic to allow us to stand up and make full use of the third floor as innkeepers' quarters and a luxury bath for Room 2. As I write this we are finally finishing sheetrock at the very top of the house.
Closer to the ground, we did our first new construction, adding 1500 sq.ft. which includes a party room, gallery/foyer, second kitchen, public rest rooms and office. The old cold room/ice house was repaired and is used as a gift shop.
Over the years we have learned some renovation tricks which we share with like-minded guests. We like to share share what we've learned, discovered and HOW to do something like this yourself.
Our advice: Try something a little smaller the first time and prepared to have the house test you!
