We purchased Friends Lake Inn in 1984 as very young newlyweds and developed it in to a 4-diamond property with a Wine Spectator “Grand Award” winning wine list. After 20 years, we were tired of the 24/7 days and the endless Staff issues that the restaurant side of things carried. Despite the fact we loved Friends Lake Inn, “Innkeeping” in general, and the lifestyle; we were ready for a change. The problem: we didn’t want to move away from this beautiful area-the Adirondack's of New York State.
We sold Friends Lake Inn in 2004, and built a brand new Bed and Breakfast, The Fern Lodge. It's right up the road from our former property on Friends Lake itself. We took our 20 years of experience and designed a luxury property with the Guests needs and our needs into account. Super high end accommodations with all the “bells and whistles” we knew our high end clientele was seeking; king-size beds, special linens, fireplaces, Jacuzzis, steam showers, solitude, private lake view porches, WiFi and a whole complement of property amenities. We gave ourselves our dream kitchen as we like to regularly share our love of food and wine with guests and friends. We designed our living quarters, with a separate staircase in a separate wing to give ourselves and our guests privacy and tranquility. Finally, with a brand new lakeside home, we escape the trials and tribulations that is inherent in a historic structure.
We find that Innkeeping is a perfect complement to our lifestyle. We love to bicycle, hike, ski and snowshoe and we live in an area that offers spectacular terrain and vistas to enjoy. These are often the same activities that the guests are coming to enjoy. We very much enjoy sharing a bottle of wine and the good conversation with our guests in front of the fireplace, around the firepit at the lake’s edge, or on a boat tour of our beautiful lake. We love to share our favorite places to take a scenic drive or hike, the history of the area, or our favorite bike loops with guests over a great breakfast. We enjoy delighting our company and sharing our passion of food and wine. We think of Innkeeping as a lifestyle-not our job.
