| A dinner invitation from a casual acquaintance often means my new friend wants to start a bed and breakfast. I’ve just taken my first sip of wine when the first question comes. "So how do you like running a bed and breakfast?" My hosts have an extra bedroom and a spare set of sheets, and, by golly, it sounds like fun. "Do you like running a bed and breakfast?" Bed and breakfast people are different, fun, and more independent. And every person has a story. Some guests volunteer to tell you theirs; with others you guess and glimpse. I meet people who take my heart as they leave. "Do you ever get a “bad” guest?" Very few. When there is a problem, I consider it a challenge to sort out. Recently, a hotel referred a guest to us. She was a tense executive constantly on her cell phone barking instructions to her staff when she wasn’t supervising me. “You don’t have an ironing board with an iron in my room. Oh well, I keep forgetting, this isn’t a hotel.” One afternoon, she popped in while I was mopping the hardwood floor and observed: “I see there are wet spots on the floor. Is that from the puppy?” What?! She’s supervising my housekeeping? I rounded on her with. “Don’t you have something to do today other than keep an eye on me?” My guest did a one-eighty. She’d been shoving and I finally shoved back. Nothing else was said about the incident, but she was a lamb after that. Our temperamental guest sent a box of jams from Oregon to thank us. It works both ways, though. If she ever returns, she’ll find an ironing board and an iron in her room. | |||
