A Day in the Life of an Innkeeper

Our Innkeeping Journal

The longer we’ve kept it, the more detailed our journal has become. Maintaining a record is useful in several respects: for one, it serves as therapy. Getting a bad day out of our heads seems easier if we can write it down. The journal is also a history and an aid to memory. Together with other documents—and Pam is a meticulous paper saver—it has given us a running commentary on improvements, disasters, our ever-shifting attitudes about inn keeping, people we want to remember, and sundry other experiences.
For instance, I once counted the number of times I climbed a flight of stairs in our three-story house during an ordinary day. Obsessive? Perhaps, but it is the repetitive experiences—the tasks we perform over and over—that wear the hardest, and one day my curiosity about climbing stairs just got the better of me. The total came to 59 ascents, all in pursuit of routine tasks. That’s an elevation increase of 501 feet (with an equal number down), equivalent to some of the day hikes Pam and I take in the woods.
Yet for all the details we’ve written down, it’s difficult to pick a typical day as an innkeeper. Greeting guests, making breakfast, cleaning rooms, doing laundry, these we do every day, but any given day typically brings a multitude of surprises. Still, I can put together a 16-hour period that’s as representative as any.

It goes something like this...
