Pamela Lanier’s Bed and Breakfasts, Inns and Guesthouses International 2012 Inn of the Year

We are delighted to announce that the A.G. Thomson House of Duluth Minnesota has been voted our Inn of the Year for 2012. Amongst the many things that our readers online and in print cited were magnificent breakfasts ultra comfortable rooms "the ultimate romantic escape from the kids" fabulous location; the superlatives went on. Innkeepers Tim and Angie Allen bought the inn which was operating but in need of major upgrades four and a half years ago. The three story Dutch colonial sits on two acres of beautiful grounds and its completely shingled exterior really sets it apart. There are seven elegant guestrooms in this historic inn all equipped with modern amenities to ensure a luxurious stay.

Tim and Angie were high school sweethearts back in Wisconsin. When Tim became an Air Force officer Angie too entered service to our country as a military wife. After 23 years of service and stationed in Duluth at the time Tim retired in 2007. The energetic couple decided to fulfill Angie’s dream of being an innkeeper. Tim and Angie fell in love with the run down but beautiful A.G. Thomson House as well as the scenic surroundings. They poured just the right amount of TLC into this historic mansion to bring it into the current century without compromising the original style and historic charm.

It didn’t take long for the A.G. Thomson house to develop a reputation in the Midwest. After just four years in business it was already named a "Top 30 Bed and Breakfast" in the entire Midwest region by Midwest Living Magazine. Without a doubt those bountiful breakfasts are in part responsible for the positive reviews. Tim’s the "muffin man" while Angie usually handles the entrees. A recent favorite breakfast (and they change daily even if you’re there for 10 days as some of their guests are!) begins with a fresh fruit parfait with yogurt or mascarpone cream. Next course: white chocolate craisin or cherry almond scones. This is soon followed by wild rice quiche served in a personal ramekin accompanied by fingerling roasted garlic potatoes. Have breakfast in the charming dining room or opt for the same full course breakfast served up to your room in a large basket everything nestled in covered dishes for you and your sweetheart to enjoy breakfast in bed.

Another wonderful advantage of the A.G. Thomson House is its location. Situated on the hill in Duluth’s East End Mansion District the inn not only offers magnificent views but also provides an ideal home base for reconnoitering all the fun activities Duluth has to offer and serves as a brilliant starting point for day trips up the north shore. There is also the option to enjoy a lazy afternoon on site especially after that breakfast in bed in which case you can access the 600 DVD collection or any of the relaxing sitting areas on the park-like grounds or the grand veranda.

A.G. Thomson House is a magnificent American B&B in the best tradition. Tim and Angie Allen are innkeepers extraordinaire!
