Melville House Inn
Newport, Rhode Island.
A 1750 Colonial Inn in Newport's Historic Hill District, one block from the Thames Street harborfront. The Melville House is on National Register of Historic Places and is like a step into the past.
Bed and Breakfast Description

The Melville House is one of the few inns in Newport dedicated to the Colonial Style and decorated in the simple tastes of the early colonists. During 1780 & 1781, French soldiers of General Rochambeau's army were quartered in Melville House. Rochambeau's headquarters were across the street in the Vernon House where he met with George Washington. David Melville, for whom the inn is named, was a colonial era pewterer and the inventor of the gas streetlight.
The Melville House breakfast is served in a sunny breakfast room featuring our homemade granola, fresh fruit, muffins, breads or scones, hot entrees including quiche, sour cream blueberries pancakes, stuffed croissant French toast, Southwestern frittata, breakfast bread with sauteed apples are also served daily. The Vermont maple syrup at the inn comes from Priscilla's original home town in Vermont.

Clarke Street, which is still lit by gas, is one of the quietest streets in Newport. This street of interesting old colonial buildings is just one block up from Thames Street - where the Brick Market Place and the harbor front are located. There you can find many of the city's finest restaurants, luxurious sailboats, antique shops and galleries.
We are also within walking distance to Newport's many places of worship such as Touro Synagogue (the oldest in the U.S.), Trinity Church (built in 1726) and Saint Mary's Church (where President John F. Kennedy married Jacqueline). The Tennis Hall of Fame, the famous and lavish mansions of the Vanderbilts, Astors and the Belmonts, the Naval War College and Newport's finest ocean beaches are also very close the The Melville House.
Most Popular Rooms:
The five rooms and the David Melville Suite of the Melville House are furnished in a traditional Colonial style and are available with private baths. The suite has a fireplace, tv and refrigerator. All rooms come with bathrobes, hair dryers and irons.
