Bed and Breakfast Description

Leave the modern world behind for a day or a few, while you travel back 800 years to a bit of medieval England, surrounded by the Wayne National Forest and just seven miles from the beautiful Hocking Hills.

Ravenwood Castle sits atop the highest hill in scenic Vinton County's Swan Township. Fifty acres of forest and large rock formations surround the castle, which is reached by a half-mile private road.

Twelfth-century Norman in style, Ravenwood Castle's crenelated towers contain the guest rooms and suites, all with elegant private baths which include garden or whirlpool tubs. Most rooms or suites offer a private balcony or deck and all have a gas fireplace with antique mantle. All have antique stained glass windows and/or lamps. Each has king or queen beds and good reading lamps.

A Great Hall with a roaring stone fireplace at one end sets the stage for overnight visits and special occasions. At the other end are three large stained glass windows from an old church. Beautiful, heavily carved tables and chairs furnish the Great Hall with a Gothic flair. After dinner can play games in the terrace-level game room, watch a vintage video or read in the library.

In the morning, a full breakfast is served in the Great Hall or in nice weather may be taken to the dining deck or lower level terrace. Ravenwood Castle's entire first floor, including four sleeping rooms, has no stairs to climb. There are no steps; instead, a "drawbridge" leads to the front door.

Very near are Ash Cave, Old Man's Cave and Cedar Falls, as well as Lake Hope State Park, in the opposite direction. Hiking, rock climbing, hunting, birding, wildflower walks, nature study, horseback riding and canoing are a few of the outdoor activities guests can enjoy.

The King Arthur Suite has a king medieval bed downstairs, double whirlpool, fireplace, and an upstairs sitting room with murals of the King Arthur stories. Balcony overlooks the formal knot garden and woods.

The Silversmith's House bristles with towers and has a round bath with red heart whirlpool. 2 bedrooms, king and queen. It anchors a rocky cliff at the end of the 'village lane.'
