Sugar Hill, forever known as home to many Harlem Renaissance artists and for its rich cultural history, is now home to the new Sugar Hill Harlem Inn, the only B&B in NYC to use renewable energy. A fully renovated Victorian townhouse built in 1906.

Bed and Breakfast Description

We invite you to experience a piece of American History. From the forgotten Weckquasgeek Tribe to the first middle class families that moved to this block in 1906 to the Harlem Renaissance and right up until today, this part of Harlem breathes history like no other. Come reside for a moment in the shadow of James Baldwin, Josephine Baker, Miles Davis, Billie Holiday, and other cultural icons of a bygone era.

This is after all where Miles Davis came to meet Sonny Rollins and hang out with him and his Sugar Hill Harlem crowd. Even before that there was Duke Ellington, his buddy Billy Strayhorn and Paul Robeson... Between the 2 World Wars, Harlem became world's capital of entertainment with its clubs like the Savoy, the Cotton Club and Small's Paradise.

One of the things we have done at Sugar Hill is to focus on the history of the Harlem Renaissance. We bought the building in 1999, and luckily many of the original details remained. We did a renovation of all the electric and plumbing systems, and we remodeled all the kitchens and bathrooms, taking care to preserve the history of the building. All our rooms are named for one of the great artists who were associated with Harlem.

The reception area is our common area where we greet our guests and breakfast is served there. We also have functions, weddings, parties, fund raisers, art shows, plays and poetry readings.

Area Attractions and Activities:

There are many reasons to visit Harlem. There is no other part of Manhattan where so many talented musicians and artists have lived.

Sugar Hill Harlem Inn is located at West 141st between Amsterdam and Convent. It is a 5 minute walk to the subway and a 10 minute ride to midtown on the A train.

City College is one block away and Columbia University is 20 blocks away (1 mile). Aaron Davis Hall is within the grounds of City College (part of the City University of New York), and a new theater called Harlem Stage at the Gatehouse, is located in an old granite water distribution plant. The Classic Theater of Harlem and the Harlem School of the Arts are 2 blocks away.

There is a large ribbon park, St Nicholas Park, one block away.
