Bed and Breakfast Description

Newport, Rhode Island bed and breakfast: Black Duck Inn

Situated in the heart of downtown Newport, just footsteps away from harbor front shops and restaurants, and a leisurely stroll to the fabulous Newport Mansions and Museums. Central air, off street parking. A non-smoking inn.

Intimate tables for two grace the modern breakfast room where guests enjoy a full breakfast.

The large and comfortable sitting room is yours to relax in after a busy day of sightseeing in downtown Newport.

Each of the two King suites with jacuzzis and fireplaces, and six Queen rooms are newly decorated in art deco and traditional designs, creating a warm, yet casually elegant atmosphere.

The name "Black Duck" occupies a memorable place in Newport history. It was the name of the notorious 1929 "Rum Runner" vessel that smuggled liquor into Newport Harbor. It was the bane of the US Coast Guard, but much admired by the local population.

Finally, one foggy night, the "Black Duck" was captured by the Coast Guard who opened fire on the boat and killed three of the four crewmen. This action caused such a furor locally that Coast Guardsmen were attacked on the streets of Newport by outraged local citizens, and demands for action against the Coast Guard reached the desk of the President of the United States.

The one surviving smuggler, considered a "Robin Hood" by many local citizens, was so well liked that when the case finally came to trial he was acquitted.
