Blue Heron is located on a pristine lake right on the edge of the million acre Boundary Waters Wilderness. All the comfort of a fine hotel with all the wilderness of a camping trip. Five course dinners optional. Hiking, biking, canoeing and skiing.

Bed and Breakfast Accommodations

The Blue Heron Bed & Breakfast is a lakeside lodge adjoining the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW) - our million acre front yard. At Blue Heron you can experience all the wilderness of a canoe trip with a king or queen size bed, private bath and meals in the dining room overlooking the lake.

You can launch from our shore to canoe, fish or just laze about. By boat or by foot you can explore the nooks and crannies of our 10 acres and the BWCA... next door.

Numerous trails and logging roads nearby can be used for hiking, biking, skiing, and snowshoeing. In winter we host dog sled trips.

Or perhaps you'd rather 'just be' in a comfortable chair by the shore, on the porch or in front of the fire.

Blue Heron's resident canine is Sam, now age 8 1/2. He is your first host, eager guide and available as your dog's personal fitness trainer - and yours. Bill's cats visit occasionally.

Our marsh is a favorite delicatessen for moose, who have been known to peek in the cabin windows. They occasionally leave evidence of their nocturnal visits on the path - watch your step.

The marsh also hosts two active beaver houses. Its calla lilies and blue flag iris are a favorite for photographers.

Deer graze on the ledge rock just behind the lodge. Early risers can often see deer from the bedroom windows.

Area Attractions and Activities:

Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness Area a one million acre front yard for the Blue Heron,permits for day trips available on site. Quetico Provincial Park Ontario is another one million acre wilderness area contiguious to the BWCA. Ely is home to The International Wolf Center and North American Bear Center. Nearby is Giant's Ridge Golf Course..a world tour course, Sudan Mine State Park & mine tour is home of the deepest Iron Mine in the world (2600 feet).
From Blue Heron you can take out snowshoes or a canoe and ejoy day trips into the wilderness. We supply maps and expertise.
Ely hosts uinque shopping opportunities. Blue Heron offers some of the best birding in North East Minnesota. The birds offer entertainment at our congeniel breakfast gathersing where the people conversation often goes on till 10 AM.
Make an advance reservation for our fine, 5-course dinners served by an executive chef. Dining room is open Wed. thru Saturday and available to the public as well.

'So Forth' is on the second floor. From its King bed experience the wonder of Northern Lights, the Milky way and the trees and waters of the BWCAW. Each room has an in-suite shower, toilet and sink. Homemade quilts. airconditioning. Opens to upper deck.

'This & That' is a two room suite, shower & toilet, whirlpool tub, Queen bed plus day bed with trundle. First floor, handicapped access. In the original log portion of the building. Looks out over the woods and the backwaters of Blue Heron Cove.
