Wheeler sits on the edge of Nehalem Bay, which is a mecca for kayaking, fishing and boating (kayaks and boats are for rent a few steps away from the hotel).

In addition, a historic train depot, right across from the hotel, offers scenic all-day train excursions into the Salmonberry River Canyon and over the summit of the Oregon Coastal Mountains.
