The house was built in 1894 in the then popular Queen Anne style, known for its ornate details and vivid colors; homes of this style are easily recognizable. The land on which the house was built was originally owned by both Jesse Fell, and US Supreme Court Justice David Davis, who was appointed to this position by one of his closest friends, President Abraham Lincoln. When this home was built it was the closest neighbor to the Davis estate, located directly at the entrance. A provision of the sale and building contracts on the homes at the entrance to the estate stipulated that these homes must be of a size and status to properly represent the upper class positions of their owners. This home was originally built for a man named Madison Carlock of the famous Illinois Carlock family. He was a prominent and successful cattle man.
