Bed and Breakfast Description

Monhegan Island, Maine bed and breakfast: The Island Inn

The Island Inn sits atop a bluff overlooking the harbor, the ocean and, in the evening, the setting sun. The original parts of the building were erected in 1816 by Josiah Starling and it became known as the Pink House. Toward the end of the century, when Monhegan became a popular destination for summer visitors, paying guests were accommodated, and in 1907, and again in 1910, the building was extended and the Island Inn became a well established part of island life.

The architecture of the inn represents a classic turn of the century style of summer hotel much reproduced during the early part of this century, but rarely found today, and suggests a more simple way of life well suited to its environment. 34 different accommodations, either with new private bathrooms or with new-shared bathrooms on the corridors - the rooms have all been redecorated in an attractive Maine style with painted floors and painted furniture, or antique oak pieces, but without the addition of telephones or televisions. Being a summer building no heating is provided but a fireplace warms the public areas when the evenings become cool and the down duvets on the beds will keep you snug at all times.

When you arrive on the island, the Island Inn Truck will meet you, to carry your luggage, and a quick two-minute walk will bring you to our front door. On your day of departure, we will take care of your luggage until your boat leaves to take you back to the mainland.

Area Attractions and Activities:

The many natural attractions include its virgin forest of firs and balsam; the headlands on the backside of the island; the coves and ledges around the island; the ice pond and its surround, from which ice was harvested not too long ago; the harbor seals found on the Duck Rocks near Pebble Beach; the unusual and rare flowers and plants and the thousands of migrating birds; and the whales that pass the island on their passage from north to south and back.

The sunsets and sunrises, both over the ocean, offer a magnificent display of nature’s most unbelievable colors. The northern lights are also evident at certain times from the island.

In addition to the natural attractions, the island is home to a working fishing village and an art community of international reputation with galleries open during the summer and workshops taking place throughout the season. A lighthouse dating from 1807, and the Lighthouse Keepers house, is now home to the Monhegan Historical and Cultural Museum.
