The Inn was once the home of Governor Edward Rutledge, youngest signer of the Declaration of Independence, and his wife Henrietta Middleton whose family owned Middleton Plantation.

Renovated in 1998, the former Governor’s mansion has been declared "Charleston's most glamorous and sophisticated Inn" by one writer and praised as "a flawless urban hideaway" by Southern Living magazine.
