![]() Upon entering this grand house be amazed by the grand proportions and Old World elegance. Each room features 20-foot ceilings, and the original wide plank floors. On the main floor every room features a unique chandelier, some original to the house, some acquired during the renovation, each with a unique history of its own. There are two common rooms, a butler's pantry with beer, wine and snacks, a screened porch, and a brick courtyard/garden for outdoor relaxation and smoking facilities. There are 8 guestrooms, four in the main house and four suites in the “Quarters”. They are all equipped with cable TV, individually controlled air conditioning and heat, hair dryers, irons, ironed sheets, plenty of oversized soft towels, bathrobes and our custom amenities. These stunning accommodations are the perfect place to spend your next VA vacation. In addition, a quiet sunroom at the top of the stairs allows guests to “slip away and enjoy the afternoon sun”. A full three-course gourmet breakfast is served between 8-10 am. Elegantly presented on silver and china, this three-course meal includes our own blend of fresh ground coffee, low fat granola, yogurt, seasonal fruits and/or homemade breads and homemade jellies, and house favorites such as Crab and Grits, the Belgian Waffle of the Season and our famous Essex Inn potatoes. Guests in the suites with their own schedules or looking for more privacy may opt to have an extended continental breakfast provided in their suite. Area Attractions and Activities: One of the original 13 properties of Tappahannock which dates back to 1705; the Inn is ideally situated for a historical stroll of the village whose Native American name meant "town on the rise and fall of water". Within a couple of blocks are historic museums, antique stores, gift shops and restaurants such as Lowry's, a local tradition since the 1940s. Guests can play golf or go fishing or cruising on the Rappahannock River. Canoe down one of the many unspoiled creeks or bike in town and along beautiful country roads. Boat rentals are also available. Visit one of the charming towns nearby such as Urbanna or Irvington or enjoy a wine tasting at one of the wineries in the area. Day trips to the many civil war sites or historic attractions include Colonial Williamsburg, Fredericksburg, Menokin and the birthplace of General Robert E Lee, Stratford Hall plantation. Boat cruises include up the river to Ingleside winery and accross the Cheasapeake Bay to Tangier island. Located on the second floor of the quarters with a private entrance. Full size sofa bed in living room, King bed and electric fireplace in bedroom, bathroom, kitchen and small balcony off kitchen. The Red Room: Located in the main house with Queen bed, private bath with bathtub, gas fireplace, four-posted bed, view of courtyard/garden and historic church. |
