Sail Inn
New Bern, North Carolina.
"A simple inn reflecting a quieter time." Sail on in to the Sail Inn, where we strive to provide an intimate personal setting for our overnight guests in a quaint, historic home.
Bed and Breakfast Description

The Sail-Inn is located in downtown historic New Bern, NC, conveniently located within walking distance of the town’s many beautiful attractions and activities.
Deed records and architectural evidence indicate that the early house was built about 1815, probably for Kezziah Chadwick and James Sawyer as a result of their marriage in August of 1814. It was during Mary Voliva's ownership that the small gable-roofed Federal period house was enlarged to its present form by the addition of a side stair hall at the east, a full second story, and the present low-hipped roof.
The present exterior appearance of the Kezziah Sawyer house is entirely the product of its ca. 1895 remodeling. It is three bays wide by two deep, with a side hall and an interior chimney between the front and back rooms, in the same position as the chimney of the original hall-and-parlor plan structure. The exterior ornament is confined to the broad overhanging cornice and the full-width front porch supported by Tuscan columns. All sash in the main section are of the two-over-two type popular at that time. The interior at the first floor level contains somewhat stylish period woodwork, including large oak mantels with mirrored over-mantels, and a wainscoted stair-hall with a dark oak-finished stair having turned balusters and a heavy paneled newel capped by a carved wooden urn. Two of the original small Federal-period mantels with unusual arched openings survived until recently at the second floor level.
