Bed and Breakfast Description

Built c. 1820 in the Georgian style, Gowrie House has been redecorated and elegantly furnished with fine antiques and works of art. Ten rooms with private ensuite baths, A/C, fireplaces and a caretaker's cottage for deluxe accommodation ~ particularly lovely for those special occasions, such as anniversaries, weddings and weekend getaways. Several of our suites are popular for honeymoons.

Comfortable rooms, friendly people and superb food. Centrally located on beautiful Cape Breton Island its a great point from which to explore. Whether here for adventure, romance, golf, or respite, the Gowrie House Country Inn is the perfect place to stay.

Convenient to the North Sydney Ferry Terminal for the Marine Atlantic/Atlantique Ferry to Port aux Basques and St. John's, Newfoundland.

You will not want to miss dinner at Gowrie House. Each evening at 7:30 p.m. (8:15 later in the year) a four course dinner is served featuring the finest local ingredients available. These ingredients include but are not limited to fresh Atlantic salmon, Cape Breton lamb and seasonal fresh produce. The menu changes daily and may offer fruit soups, salads, a choice of meat or fish entree, and a choice of desserts, such as our signature dessert - Hazelnut Meringue Torte.

Area Attractions and Activities:

Fortress of Louisbourg: This National Historic Site features costumed interpreters re-creating the life at the fortress 250 years ago.

The Highland Village overlooks the spectacular Bras d'Or Lakes and depicts the life of Gaelic-speaking Scots in Nova Scotia. Glace Bay was a community built on coal.

Be sure to visit the Miners' Museum and the Marconi National Historic Site.

Two Rivers Wildlife Park: This 500-acre park is home to many native animals including black bears, moose, deer and cougars.

Sydney Mines Heritage & Fossil Museum ~ showcasing coal production and the history of the area, as well as one of the largest fossil finds.

Golf ~ we are located within 1.5 hours of one of Canada's highest rated golf courses. There are four others that are wonderful courses handy as well.

Music & Theatre ~ Cape Breton is known for its music ~ Celtic, Blues, Country, etc. Its all here. There are many places that showcase music.
Membertou in Sydney, and Savoy in Glace Bay.

Most Popular Rooms:

Room 3: Soft green garden-like colouring. Relax in the beautiful glassed-in sunroom that overlooks the English Garden. This room is definitely a home away from home, with a king size bed, fireplace, and private standard 4-piece bath.

Room 8: This room is located on the upper level of the Garden House. Features soothing colours and a wonderfully hand-carved ironwood headboard set off with a campaign armoire. French doors lead onto a lovely balcony overlooking the garden.
