Area Attractions and Activities: Maine’s scenic Midcoast, from Freeport to Camden to Bar Harbor, is a top destination for visitors from near and far. Its quaint seaside villages such as Port Clyde, Searsport and Blue Hill abound with beautiful and historic sea captains’ homes, antique shops, art galleries, lobster pounds and restaurants. Penobscot Bay, the centerpiece of the Midcoast, renowned for hundreds of miles of shoreline, provides picturesque venues for windjammer cruises, whale watching tours and kayaking. Widely known for its annual LobsterFest, Blues Festival, numerous concerts and art fairs, and the ever-popular Common Ground Fair in late September, the area is also home to Penobscot Marine Museum, Farnsworth Art Museum/Wyeth Center and Owl’s Head Transportation Museum. University-visiting families will find Unity College, Maine Maritime Academy, University of Maine at Orono and Colby College all within the area. Centrally located on the Midcoast is Belfast, a classic New England harbor town. For years hardworking lobster fishermen have worked from Belfast’s harbor, providing local lobster pounds with their daily catch. Sailboats and other leisure craft, too, fill the harbor, and local charters introduce visitors to the bay’s many islands and coves. Within reach of Belfast are both popular commercial and magnificent natural attractions, enhancing its appeal as the perfect hub from which to explore this beautiful part of Services: Tour company offers airport pick-up, motorcar tours of midcoast Maine, and kayak and bicycle tours.
