Hilo, Hawaii bed and breakfast: Shipman House B&B
Three guest rooms, two separate cottages available. Awaken to cardinals, doves and Chinese thrushes singing in the rainforest outside.

A glorious celebration of Island foods, not usually available to visitors, is served on the lanai, with a view of Hilo Bay and the Pacific Ocean. A rainforest-lined gulch of palms, bamboo and mango is next to the house.

Take a self-guided tour of your host's ancestral home The Shipmans have been an influential part of East Hawaii for 150 years, and much of that is reflected in the furnishings and stories. Jack London stayed here for 5 weeks one hundred years ago. Queen Liliuokalani was a friend and visitor, and you may play the same piano she did.

A typical continental buffet has macadamia nut granola, assorted local fruits in season (there are 20 varieties of fruit trees on the property), fruit juices, Kona coffee, special breads or muffins. When available, we may add baked bananas, hashed brown taro, or breadfruit.

Some of the fruits (in season) are papayas, mango, rambutan, mangosteen, banana, white pineapple (very little acid), starfruit, avocado, surinam cherry, guava, passion fruit (lilikoi), mountain apple, atemoya, figs and assorted citrus, grown on the estate. A botanical walk through the grounds will also reveal cinnamon, ylang ylang (used in perfumes), vanilla orchids, bay rum, anthuriums, tropical azaleas, and much more.

We will cheerfully recommend restaurants and suggest your sightseeing itinerary.
