The Mast Farm Inn

Valle Crucis, North Carolina.

The Mast Farm Inn has been welcoming guests since the 1800s; while we have added modern amenities, the hospitality remains the same: attentive and sincere. Eight spacious guestrooms and six romantic getaway cottages offered. Come make yourself at home.

Bed and Breakfast Description

Valle Crucis, North Carolina bed and breakfast: The Mast Farm Inn

Recommended by Southern Living (May 2005) and The New York Times (Oct 2005). On the National Register of Historic Places, The Mast Farm Inn specializes in peaceful, simple joys like freshly brewed morning coffee delivered to your door, private breakfasts in one of our wood-paneled dining rooms, porches with rockers, fireplaces, and soaking tubs for two (we provide the bubble bath).

Enjoy one of eight spacious guestrooms in our 3-story 1880s farmhouse, or one of four romantic getaway cottages crafted from the original 19th Century farm buildings. Two new cottages nestled in the pine woods have been added, with a hot tub under the stars between them.

Settle in and enjoy dinner at the inn, one of the finest restaurants in the area. Fresh, organic, contemporary regional cuisine created by Chef Ed Winebarger is offered on our á la carte menu. The seasonal menu is complimented by fine wines. Gather around the wormy chestnut bar in Aunt Josie's and enjoy a glowing fire in winter; the bar is open to the rock terrace in summer and offers small plates to accompany a glass of wine.

Our terrace is bordered by the hill garden, with lilacs, peonies and lilies, just to name a few of its flowers. Beyond are the rhododendrons and the gazebo beside the path leading to our two new cottages. The inn's many organic gardens emphasize our "green inn" status, promoting environmentally sensitive practices.

Appreciate the change of pace as you get on “mountain time” during your stay with us.

Area Attractions and Activities:

Surrounded by the Blue Ridge Mountains, the Inn is located in the wide Watauga River Valley, in the only rural historic district in North Carolina. Valle Crucis, home of the original Mast General Store, is convenient to Boone, Blowing Rock, and Banner Elk, The Blue Ridge Parkway and Grandfather Mountain; all the hikes and scenery that they offer are a short drive away.

Whitewater rafting, tubing, canoeing, and fly-fishing are close by on the Watauga and New Rivers. Enjoy golfing with a backdrop of mountains.

Trails for mountain biking abound. In winter, enjoy downhill or cross-country skiing and ice skating. For children, Tweetsie Railroad is a must. Quieter activities include wonderful and varied shopping: art galleries, mountain crafts, such as pottery and jewelry making; American and English antiques.

Leave time for relaxing on the porch or in front of a fire. Stay for a week--you won't run out of things to do in the High Country!

Most Popular Rooms:

Cousin Sarah’s: On the 3rd floor of the farmhouse, and is many guests' favorite. The four poster cherry king bed is the center piece. A clawfoot soaking tub for two is tucked into an alcove behind a screen. A chaise lounge is by the window.

Loom House: The original two-story log cabin built in 1812 is a truly unique private cottage. Its massage tub, original woodburning fireplace, wet bar, private porch with rockers, and now A/C, offer you total comfort in early 19th Century surroundings.
