![]() Built in 1895 as a clubhouse for a proposed golf course around Lake Holly, Barclay Cottage came into the Williamson Family who lived in it for several years before conveying it to Lillian Barclay in 1916. Miss Lillian operated the property as a guest house until her death in 1989 making it the oldest continuously operating lodgings in Hampton Roads. Miss Barclay also ran a private school here for over 50 years. In 1990, developers purchased the property and built 5 houses on the grounds. They renovated the old house, upgrading all utilities and installing heat and air conditioning. Saved from the wrecking ball, it is one of only two surviving Victorian Cottages at the oceanfront. Its most prominent feature is the two story wraparound porch. Guests enjoy sitting in wicker chairs or rockers and, in season, may sip a cold beverage or smoke a cigar while watching the fireworks over the water every Wednesday and Sunday. With over 20 restaurants, 3 museums, the Convention Center, and many shops and clubs close by, it was voted by Inn Traveler "One of the Best Inns in North America." Called a "Great Getaway" by Washintonian, and "One of the 8 best places in the world to propose to your honey" by Continental Airline's inflight magazine, Barclay Cottage is sure to provide a romantic interlude. Business travelers, looking for a homier alternative to a motel room, will find fax and copy services, free WIFI, and a guest computer and printer. Area Attractions and Activities: After breakfast, head for the beach with complimentary beach chairs, umbrellas, towels and boogie boards. Go birdwatching, or on a nature walk. Kayak with the dolphins - or ask us for other suggestions ... there is so much to do here at the beach. In cooler weather, enjoy a day of whale-watching with scientists from the Virginia Marine Science Center, or explore the many museums and shops in the area. Of course, the fish are biting at every time of year, and the Virginia Beach Fishing Center runs party boats and charters all year. Or catch your limit from the fishing pier only 3 blocks away (April-October). At day's end, return to the Cottage for a hot chocolate or glass of wine while planning dinner at one of the excellent nearby restaurants. Decide whether to attend a concert or dance performance, take in a show, go clubbing, hit the boardwalk and enjoy the free entertainment along Beach Street, chill out with a good book or watch the world go by in a porch rocker. Services: Broadband WIFI, extensive library of books, DVDs, VHS videos, games, ABC license, gift shop Most Popular Rooms: Lillian's Room: Furnished with a queen bed, private bath with jetted spa tub/shower, and drop front desk, this traditional, Victorian styled, first floor room keeps the memory of Lillian Barclay alive. Lighthouse Room: You'll not forget you're at the beach in this room. On the first floor, with queen bed, private bath with jetted spa tub/shower, and charming lighthouse decor, you can almost hear the fog horns. |
