Located approximately 35 mi (56 km) north of San Luis Obispo, Cambria is an unincorporated coastal community primarily developed by vacation homes. Cambria is characterized by year-round, Mediterranean-type weather and engaging natural surroundings. Many kayaking and surfing opportunities, as well as guided tours and instructional classes, are easily accessible from the village as it borders the Pacific Ocean. The area's natural marine inhabitants, primarily elephant seals, are available for viewing by the non-profit organization Friends of the Elephant Seal. Cambria's residents are an eclectic mixture of retirees, ranchers, artists, writers, musicians and families who are proud of their heritage and place on the map. The result is that the village boasts numerous artist-run and commercial galleries featuring ever-changing showcases of work produced by local artists.
