Les Ecuries

St-Saëns, France.

In estate buildings dating from the 17th century these superbly comfortable, stylish and original lodges set in lush Normandy countryside are ideal for taking an informal rural break within easy reach of the D-day beaches and Paris.

Bed and Breakfast Description

St-Saëns, bed and breakfast: Les Ecuries

All our rooms have ensuite facilities and are individually styled in a simple practical way. The estate and buildings have a long history dating from the 12th century, two artists are transforming the remains of the once 60 acre domain.

Recently a working farm, the estate now reflects it's own past with the discovery of the old foundations of a 12th century church and manor house which are incorporated into the overall garden design. Over 14 years more than a 100 trees have been planted.

The lodges sleep 2, 6 and 10 which can be taken individually or together. We like to let our guests have their privacy and use of the lodges as their own though we are happy to give information about the local places of interest and the estate history.

Over the years we have accumulated a good deal of information and met quite a few veterans of the d-day landings and have come to know the local area and its history well. We are able to give guided tours of Impressionist country with an introduction to this important modern movement in Art or to accompany any trip to the Normandy beaches.

Area Attractions and Activities:

Two hours from the D-Day beaches, the house is close to the huge Forest d'Eawy, the largest natural beech forest in Europe and the historic city of Rouen. This is chateau country, with numerous wonderful gardens and chateaux. The impressionist painters used to gather in a bar in Dieppe after a hard days painting in the Normandy countryside, Monet painted extensively in the area.

Pony trekking and riding are available at nearby St. Saens. The historic city of Rouen is 20 minutes, Monet's garden at Giverney and the city of Paris, two hours. The charming fishing port of Dieppe is 40 minutes, London is 4.5 hours away by car.

There are many other active ways to enjoy yourself in the vicinity though some do involve an hour or so's driving. These include parachuting, bungee jumping and river traverse, tree adventure courses, quad biking, go karting, wind and kite surfing, fishing and hiking.

Most Popular Rooms:

In the old estate chapel, this twin room sits in the oak beams of a 17th century building on it's own in the middle of the estate overlooking the forest and the croquet lawn with the old foundations of the manor house visible.

All rooms are individual as each has unique architectural features and layout so there's something for everyone. We have made a feature of the wooden beams some of which are at least 300 years old. All beds are large with hyperallergenic latex mattresses.
