In Frigiliana, Casa Doña Angela is a stone’s throw from the church and the village square. Behind old, double oak doors at the top of an alleyway hides an old rambling house, a magical oasis of tranquility.

Bed and Breakfast Description

The decor is an eclectic mix of antiques and ethnic effects from Spain, Morocco, France and Asia, creating an essentially Moorish feel to a spacious, elegant and comfortable home.

The secluded garden, with a large pool and terraces providing ample shade from the hot sun, is planted with exotic trees and flowers and enjoys magnificent views to the sunset over distant hills.

Casa Doña Angela is available in two options. Either rented privately for groups or families of 8-10 persons, charged weekly or on a bed & breakfast basis for individual travelers, charged per person per night.

History of the House: According to local records, the site on which the property is built was originally the location of a public washing place which, in the 18th century, was converted into a soap factory. In the existing Escritura there is a reference to there having been a drying room for teasels: vats used in the process of soap making occupied the whole of the north boundary.

The older portions of the existing house date from the 12th century. However, recent building work revealed traces of Phoenician brickwork. The land to the west, now laid out to gardens and the swimming pool, is believed at one time to have been terraced vineyards for the production of the local sweet moscatel wine, which is still widely produced and enjoyed.

Area Attractions and Activities:

Lovely walks are to be made throughout the surrounding countryside, full of interest for birdwatchers, botanists and artists. One can walk along the ancient acequias (irrigation channels) built by the Phoenicians, which snake around the rugged mountainsides behind, still bringing fresh water to the village below as they have done for thousands of years.

The dramatic gorge too can be explored along the bed of the river Higueron back into the massive feet of the Sierra Almijara mountain range rising behind the village. The pueblos blancos of Frigiliana, Cómpeta, and Torrox form the Ruta de Vinos of Axarquia, each producing their own brand of vino del terreno from the moscatel grape.

Nerja, on the seaside below Frigiliana, is a 10 minute drive downhill. Although touristic, when inside its narrow streets Nerja has charm - and a wide range of restaurants, bars, shops and cafés. It is fun to visit on market days or when in need of the bustle of a larger town.
