Augill Castle

Kirkby Stephen, England, U.K..

A truly family friendly castle, Augill is run in an informal house party style. Between England's Lake District and Yorkshire Dales national parks, ideal for touring the north of England & Scotland. A perfect slice of English country house family life.

Bed and Breakfast Accommodations

Kirkby Stephen, bed and breakfast: Augill Castle

Unlike anywhere you have ever stayed before, Simon and Wendy Bennett run the castle in a modern, informal style; it is a house which is happiest when it is full. Step out of reality and into a more relaxed place altogether. No formal reception desk to greet you but rather a collection of comfy leather chairs around a roaring fire.

It is a real home with children, cats, dogs, chickens, and ducks; muddy boots kicked off by the door and toys tidied carelessly into a corner. Guests can be part of the family or keep to themselves. Anything goes at Augill except hushed tones and false formality.

The gilded, vaulted ceilings, the turrets, and the stained-glass windows are just a few of the magical features you'll find in this castle.

Simon & Wendy work hard to retain the castle's unique family atmosphere, believing that, together with big pillows, large towels, good showers, fresh ground coffee and homemade biscuits to be more important than direct dial telephones, modem ports, and trouser presses.

The castle has fourteen bedrooms, all of an equal standard but each with a different character. Some are interconnecting, others, self contained estate houses.

While the surroundings may be quirky, this is after all a Victorian gentleman's folly, be assured of the finest bed linens, homemade treats, hand made toiletries and fresh ground coffee in every room.

The castle runs cookery classes for children and is also available for exclusive hire for weddings or house parties.
