Admiral's Inn

St. John's, Antigua / Barbuda.

Admiral's Inn is on the southeast coast of Antigua in Nelson's Dockyard at English Harbour, an active yachting center and historical area. The Inn's terrace restaurant and bar overlook the historic harbor.

Bed and Breakfast Description

St. John's, bed and breakfast: Admiral's Inn

Admirals' Inn is situated in a secluded section of historic Nelson's Dockyard at English Harbour, on the south coast of Antigua. The main building is a Georgian brick structure with a spacious terrace looking out over the water and yachts lying at anchor. The building was planned in 1785 (the year after Nelson arrived as Captain of HMS BOREAS) and completed in 1788.

Now, there are 9 rooms on the two upper floors, while the lounge, dining and kitchen facilities are on the ground floor. An annex just across the pillared lawn, houses 4 more rooms, and adjacent to that is the "Joiner's Loft" apartment, with 2 double rooms, a kitchen and a spacious living-room overlooking the harbor. Each room has a private bath. Most are furnished with 2 twin beds, but 3 of the superior rooms have queen beds. Air conditioning and telephones are in the superior and moderate rooms, other rooms are cooled by ceiling fans. The annex rooms each have a small patio and garden entranceway.

All meals are served on an a la carte basis, with a varied menu selection. The tree-shaded terrace is a delightful place to sit and dine, looking out over the water. Local seafood is the specialty, and fresh local produce is used whenever possible. A full list of wines is offered.

Music is often presented in the evening at the Inn in the form of a steel band or flute & string band, but in general the atmosphere is peaceful and low-key.

Area Attractions and Activities:

Free transportation is provided to nearby beaches, five minutes by boat or car. Freeman's Bay, is a white sandy beach with boat access only for good snorkeling at reefs near by. There is also a lovely beach at Pigeon Point in Falmouth Harbour, now a National Park. Ask at the desk for snorkeling gear and beach towels, and enjoy the beaches!

A network of walking trails has been created to allow for everyone’s enjoyment of the natural beauty and rich heritage of the National Park. The footpath to Fort Berkeley begins by the southern wall of the Dockyard. This is a pleasant walk with a good view at the end. The fort is interesting as a fine example of old time military engineering.

There are craft stands, restaurants, and shops with excellent bargains in the Dockyard area. Nearby is Shirley Heights, where Sunday evenings are a festival of food and live music. Other late-night entertainment is available within walking distance.
