After a series of fires, the town residents began using brick to expand their town, rather than timber. The arrival of the twentieth century brought misfortune to Jacksonville, as the popularity of the railroad increased and the town gradually fell out of prominence. As a result, Jacksonville remained somewhat untouched by time, with beautiful Victorian, brick buildings and homes which still embroider the town today. Jacksonville’s timeless beauty has ultimately been the town’s salvation, as bed and breakfast travelers from throughout the world visit to witness and stay in such an extraordinary place. The historic homes of Jacksonville are varied combinations of classical revival, gothic revival, Italianate, Queen Anne and craftsman architecture, and open to public visitation throughout the year. Bed and breakfast guests will enjoy visiting Jacksonville’s Pioneer Cemetery, as well. The cemetery is one of the oldest in the Pacific Northwest and contains over four thousand graves in a thirty two acre area.
