Cinnamon Mornings and Chocolate Dreams

Ingredients:
1 large loaf Italian/French bread, sliced into 1 1/2" slices

Milk mixture:
8 extra large eggs
3 1/2 cups 2% milk
1/2 cup sugar
1 Tbsp vanilla extract
2 tsp orange zest
1/4 tsp nutmeg

Fruit mixture:
3 Tbsp butter
4-6 apples or pears, peeled and cut into 1/2" wedges
4 Tbsp crystallized ginger, minced
1/2 tsp ground ginger (or to taste)
cinnamon, to taste
sugar, to taste

Topping: 1/4 cup sliced almonds

Instructions:
Milk mixture: Beat together the eggs, milk, sugar, vanilla extract, orange zest and nutmeg. Set aside.

Fruit mixture: In a fry pan, melt the butter over medium-low heat. Sautee the fruit with the crystallized ginger, ground ginger, cinnamon and enough sugar to sweeten it. Set aside.

Assembly: Spray a 9" x 13" glass baking dish with cooking spray and lay the bread slices on the bottom, packing them in tightly. Pour the milk mixture over the bread slices. Layer the sauteed fruit on top. Cover and refrigerate overnight.

In the morning, remove from refrigerator and let it sit out for 30 minutes (covered). Preheat over to 350 degrees. Sprinkle the French Toast with the almonds and additional sugar (optional). Bake uncovered for one hour.
